Diese Fahrzeuge wurden Ende der 1950er als Dienstfahrzeug für Oberbaukontrolleure und Bahnmeistereien entwickelt. Die Herstellung begann um 1950 im Forschungs- und Entwicklungswerk der DR in Blankenburg (Harz). Das Weichenwerk Kirchmöser führte diese später fort. Die Karosserie besteht aus Aluminium. Als Antrieb verwendete man Motor, Getriebe und Achsen des zur gleichen Zeit gebauten Trabant P50. Sie boten 3 Personen Platz. Später wurden hydraulische Wendevorrichtungen nachgerüstet.

Das Gleiskraftrad GKR Typ 1 "Schienentrabi" bieten wir in den Farben gelb und blau, jeweils mit austauschbarem Verdeck, an.
