The HGe 4/4 II is a narrow-gauge locomotive for both rack-and-pinion and adhesion operation. The Furka-Oberalp-Bahn and the SBB purchased the first series of five locomotives starting in 1985 for service on the narrow-gauge Brünigbahn. With a power output of 1932 kW (approximately 2600 hp) and a maximum speed of 100 km/h or 40 km/h on rack sections, these locomotives ushered in a new era. Due to their excellent performance in practice, follow-up orders were placed from 1990, resulting in the SBB and FO each having eight and the Brig-Visp-Zermatt-Bahn having five in their fleets. The locomotives are still in service today. The former FO and BVZ locomotives operate with the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, and the former SBB Brünigbahn locomotives run with the Zentralbahn.

Notable is their use in the Glacier-Express trains of the MGB between Zermatt and Disentis and for car shuttle trains through the Furka Tunnel between Oberalp and Realp. In recent years, the MGB has begun thoroughly modernizing the locomotives, which is easily recognizable by their new electronics, LED headlights, and new color schemes. These locomotives will thus continue to serve in the Swiss mountains for many years.
